F.Y.I (for your information)

We offer private certified lab testing pertaining to human and animal post mortem tissue and cremains (ashes, bone slivers, etc).  So if you are searching for DNA determinations on post mortem tissue, hair, nails, or blood, we can help you.  Often times hair, urine, tissue, or blood samples are retained by your County Coroners office. The samples may have been collected from an autopsy procedure or from testing the blood or urine by a hospital or clinic prior to your loved one's passing.  The hospital where a baby was stillborn may have saved similar samples which can be utilized for DNA and/or toxin evaluations.

Cremation

Cremation is the practice of disposing of a human or animal corpse by burning the remains in a retort or oven which usually takes place in a crematorium or crematory. Cremains are described as any physical remains that are found in the commemorative urn following the cremation of a corpse, human or animal.  By law, human corpses are to be cremated one at a time.  Animals can be cremated as a group depending on size, the efficiency of the retort, and the customary operating procedures of the crematorium director.  Customarily a metal identification tag able to withstand the high cremation temperatures (760 to 1150 °C (1400 to 2100 °F) is placed on the corpse prior to cremation.  When the cremains or ashes are urned the I.D. tag is also urned with the ashes. As you can likely see the identity of the cremains still requires a high degree of trust from the entity that provides the services.  Would you agree that this fact is something to think about? How would you know for sure if in fact your loved one 's remains are within the urn that has been turned over to you following the cremation? You or a family representative would need to be present to insure that the corpse of your loved one was in fact the one placed in the retort and then urned. You or your chosen representative would need to witness the removal and urning of the cremains. Thanks to a newer technology known as nuclear DNA, cremains can be suitable sources for DNA profile extraction for comparison to a reference DNA sample.  The use of Nuclear DNA is common to forensic or court of law case proceedings. Cremains, depending on the efficiency of the retort, can offer the potential for evaluating for the presence of heavy metals including arsenic, mercury, lead, and many others.  Our clients have resorted to cremains DNA extraction and/or toxin, poison, and heavy metals testing evaluations when there simply was no other choice for postmortem investigation such as autopsy or post mortem tissue samples. If you have any doubts or uncertainties about the cremation of your loved one you need to call us now.

Worthwhile read regarding the potential for the selling of body parts and cadavers by crematorium operators

About 900 lawsuits are filed on average/year against crematorium operators regarding the final disposition of the deceased's body

Lab testing of cremains (cremated ashes) for identifiable DNA profile extractions and for the presence of heavy metals should be considered as a last resort testing option. The preferred postmortem testing sample choices are blood, urine, or tissue samples belonging to the deceased from premortem medical treatment or post mortem autopsy. Autopsy samples of choice would include vitreous eye fluid, organ tissue or blood.  Be sure to contact all involved medical services providers and your County Coroner's office to see if they have retained any pre or post mortem samples belonging to the deceased. These tissue samples can be tested for the presence of toxins and poisons.

Yes, cremains, human or animal, can undergo testing with a 50/50 chance for detection of an identifiable DNA profile for identity or for the detection of heavy metal poison such as Arsenic. If cremains are your only available sample we suggest that you proceed with any required testing to bring closure and lay to rest any suspicions you may hold regarding the loss of your friend or loved one.

We would be glad to discuss your case and answer your questions.
